The Catholic Welfare Bureau leased 80 apartments in Florida City. This was used as a transit shelter for girls and boys under the age of twelve. It was licensed by the State Welfare Department for 700 children. It had its own elementary school staffed by Sisters of St. Philip Neri from Cuba. It closed in June 1965, after most of the children were reunited with their parents. The buildings still exist and are used for lower income housing residents.
